The Government of West Bengal unbundled the former West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) into two entities: West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (WBSETCL).
WBSEDCL’s primary business is the distribution and hydro generation of electricity. It also serves as the nodal agency for the Government of West Bengal, handling rural electrification to provide electricity access to all rural households, which aligns with the National Rural Electrification Policy.
The company is managed by a Board of twelve members, including seven Executive Directors (including the Chairman and Managing Director), one Woman Director, and four Independent Directors.
WBSEDCL has evolved into a leading power utility services organization in India. In response to the changing market and increasing demand for electricity post-global slowdown, WBSEDCL strives to enhance service quality for its 2.03 crore customers across West Bengal through its extensive network of 5 Zones, 20 Regional Offices, 76 Distribution Divisions, and 534 Customer Care Centers.
The company has progressed from providing engineering solutions to addressing complex customer challenges and offering innovative solutions. WBSEDCL has implemented Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) with SAP in Financial Accounting & Control, Material Management, HR with Payroll, Plant Maintenance, and Project Systems.
Following the successful implementation of the Purulia Pumped Storage Project (900 MW hydel power) in the 10th Plan period, the company is now working on the ambitious Turga Pumped Storage Project in the 13th Plan period, with a 4 x 250 MW capacity.
To address complex customer challenges and enhance service efficiency, WBSEDCL has undertaken the Integrated Power Development Scheme to strengthen sub-transmission and distribution networks and meter distribution transformers in urban areas. Additionally, the Sech Bandhu Scheme aims to improve rural systems.
WBSEDCL is innovating with IT-enabled systems across the organization to ensure greater engineering predictability and position itself as the top utility in the country in terms of customer service, efficiency, and financial viability.
